Congregational meeting update
At the congregational meeting held July 10 at St. Matthew’s, the following Resolution was unanimously approved and will be forwarded to Halifax Presbytery for consideration:
“Whereas we have been advised by Halifax Presbytery on a course of action that involves rescinding the JNAC report of August 30, 2010 and striking a new JNAC; and
Whereas this course of action requires due care and consideration; and
Whereas this consideration will not be possible to complete during the summer when many congregation members are away and/or unavailable; and
Whereas the appointment of our minister of word, sacrament and pastoral care is currently scheduled to conclude on September 30, 2011;
The congregation of St. Matthew’s United Church requests that Halifax Presbytery extend the appointment of the Rev. Betsy Hogan until June 30, 2012, or until such time as the recommended course of action can be completed.”

Benefit performance for Halifax Circus
Only 13 benefit tickets still available for Quidam by Cirque du Soleil on July 20, 7:30 pm at Halifax Metro Centre. Featuring acrobatics, dance, gymnastics and music, Quidam tells the story about a young girl’s escape into a world of imagination. The July 20 performance will support Halifax Circus Circle, whose young athletes practise at St. Matthew’s. Tickets ($85) are available at the church office, 423-9209 or through Halifax Circus Circle, 830-3123. Information: http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/quidam/default.aspx and http://circuscircle.ca

SummerSounds@Barrington, Thursdays at 12:15 pm
The July 21 concert features Angelina Davey, soprano. In May Angelina graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Mount Allison University, where she was the featured convocation performer. She now plans to study vocal performance in New Zealand. Angelina is an engaging singer whose personality brings life and excitement to her performances.

Our popular summer concerts happen at 12:15 pm on Thursdays during July and August. Bring your lunch, enjoy great music, and recommend the concerts to friends. Suggested donation $5.

Talk Film, Talk Faith

The question “Have you seen this film?” often leads to discussion about the story, its characters and their choices, fears and longings, and social issues. In conjunction with the Atlantic Film Festival Sept. 16–18, the Atlantic School of Theology is sponsoring a workshop to explore Christian faith through the medium of film. Dr. Alyda Faber, Professor of Systematic Theology and Ethics, will be the facilitator in a format that involves discussion groups and a panel of Halifax filmmakers. Registration is $150; deadline is Aug. 26.

AST movie pics will be determined based on group ticket availability and the official Atlantic Film Festival schedule. Talk Film, Talk Faith participants will find out which films they are attending at orientation. The registration brochure is available at
