Lenten Calendar
Lent is the 40 days (minus Sundays) that precede Easter. It is a season of prayer and preparation, and reminds us of the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert before he began his ministry of teaching and healing. The traditional colour of Lent is purple, symbolizing repentance.

During each Lenten service we light a candle to mark the six invitations of the Season of Lent – Resistance, Responsibility, Trust, Repentance, Forgiveness, Faithfulness. Adapted from a resource of Rev. Mindi Welton-Mitchell, http://rev-o-lution.org

Lenten Sunday Studies – After church (noon-2 pm) in the parlour. Bring a bag lunch. You are welcome to attend any that interest you. All questions are good questions!
Feb. 24 – Preparing a/your funeral in advance
(Mar. 3 – Session/Stewards and Official Board meetings)
Mar. 10 – A walk through the Bible
Mar. 17 – Different ways to pray
Mar. 24 – Faith in our home life

Thu. Mar. 28 – Maundy Thursday Communion Service, 7:30 pm

Penny collection throughout February and March – Are you saving pennies for a good cause? Bring them to church during Lent and put them in the giant jar at the entranceway (loose or rolled). They will support St. Matthew’s outreach activities like the Benevolent Fund and Sunday Breakfast. If you don’t have many pennies, rest assured that all coins are welcome!

Thinking about ...
... The late Laura Wellard, who would have celebrated her 102nd birthday on Feb. 18. Her daughter, Hilary, sponsored the Sunday bulletin in loving memory of her mother.
... Cheryl Fraser, recovering from surgery at home

St. Matthew’s folks in the community
The Roaring Girl – Feb. 20-24, Vile Passéist Theatre’s production, The Roaring Girl, atNeptune Scotiabank Studio Theatre. In order to convince his father to let him marry a poor widow’s daughter, a young Londoner publicly courts the cross-dressing, swearing, brawling beauty, Moll Cutpurse. Little does he know that this ridiculous match will inspire a chain of disguises, plots, skirmishes, and love-triangles, each more outrageous than the last! Featuring a memorable original score and a talented cast, including our own Jolene Pattison.

Runners United for Change – May 19, Bluenose Marathon weekend. The United Church’s Runners United for Change encourages church people to walk or run in one of the Bluenose Marathon races on Sunday, May 19 to raise money for the Mission and Service (M&S) Fund. Choose from four distances: 5 km, 10 km, 21.1 km (half marathon) and 42.2 km (full marathon). Participants ask friends, family and church members to sponsor them, with all donations going to M &S.
Last year several St. Matthew’s runners participated, and the Maritime Conference group raised $13,000; this year’s target is $15,000. If you are a novice, the team can help you get ready. You don’t have to run it all – alternate running and walking, or just walk. And it doesn’t matter how long you take, as long as you try! Take time for yourself, get in shape, and make a difference in the world – contact Keltie van Binsbergen, (902) 868-1990 or sjminister@eastlink.cafor more information or to get started on your running program.
